The project I thought up for work on Wednesday-telescopes for our space theme!
The kids colored cardboard tubes with markers, then we used a rubber band to secure small pieces of wax paper for a lens. Finally, we dunked the wax paper in glue and glitter so they could look through and “see the stars”. The kids AND the parents all loved it! =D
Our very own caterpillar after reading “The very hungry caterpillar”. Each circle has a different day of the week.
TODAY IN THE CLASSROOM I…
…was reminded why I think I’d like being a teacher.
…played sight word bingo.
…talked about life and animals through the eyes of six year olds.
…ate sour Skittles and chomped fruity bubble gum.
…read books in the cozy corner.
…played some more.
…was reminded why I am majoring in sciences and Spanish and not elementary education.
…got lots and lots of loving {and a little sticky} bear hugs.and I loved every minute of it.
Kids are so innocent and refreshing, and their different outlooks on life inspire me. They have a natural way of bringing me to live in the moment and feel relaxed and worry-free {well, at times :) }. I am fortunate to have a mom who is so passionate about her job {Reading Specialist at our local elementary schools} and she’s wonderful at it. Observing my mom in her element doing what she’s best at is so special and exciting {and sometimes makes me giggle, because to me her job is mom, not Mrs. Teacher lady}. Lucky for me, she and her students love having visitors!
Ah, the little things that make my heart smile.
See you tomorrow!
First day project: Friend Tree. Everyone puts their thumb print on the tree then teacher later frames it and hangs it as a reminder that we are all friends.

1) Push Out Content in Different Ways
You know what’s exhausting? Preparing PowerPoints, presentations and other lectures! Guess what? You don’t have to do this all the time. Yes, there is a time and a place for a lecture or direct instruction, but there is also a place for a variety of strategies to have students take ownership of content learning. Use jigsaw techniques, games that teach, reciprocal teaching and other effective strategies that put students in the driver’s seat of learning. Move from sage of the stage to guide on the side. While all lessons require preparation and planning, a variety of lesson types can not only keep your students interested, but also keep you energized to try new ways of teaching.
I gave out a research project this week and one of my students said, “teachers don’t even teach these days.” I just ignore it.
How do you see to avoid teacher burnout? What advice do you have for others?

I love making dens. Give me some string, a sheet and a few bamboo sticks and I can knock up another world in minutes. Somewhere to play, have fun and make up your own rules. But den making isn’t something I do just for my own children. Every week I go into schools and help pupils and teachers…
